Wildfires and Heatwaves Redefine Travel Trends, Encouraging Shifts Toward Cooler Destinations like Scandinavia, UK, and Ireland in 2025: Here’s All You Must Know

In the summer of 2025, Southern Europe has been hit by a series of unprecedented heatwaves and wildfires, turning once-popular holiday hotspots into landscapes of devastation. Across Spain, Greece, Italy, and Portugal, the searing heat has been relentless, pushing temperatures to record highs and sparking wildfires that have ravaged both the environment and local communities. The scene is dramatic: black smoke rising into the sky, the air thick with ash, and whole regions suffering from the dual threat of extreme heat and destructive fires.
For many travelers, what was once an idyllic Mediterranean summer vacation is now a dangerous and uncomfortable experience. As a result, travelers are seeking refuge in cooler climates, heading north in search of respite from the oppressive heat. This shift in travel patterns has significant implications for both the tourism industry in Southern Europe and the broader European travel market, which is grappling with how to adapt to increasingly extreme weather patterns.
This article will explore the effects of these heatwaves and wildfires on tourism, the shifting travel trends emerging in the wake of these climate disruptions, and the growing interest in “coolcations” – vacations in cooler northern regions that promise relief from the blistering heat.
Southern Europe’s Heatwaves and Wildfires: A Devastating Scenario
Southern Europe’s intense summer heat is nothing new, but the scale and severity of the 2025 heatwaves are unprecedented. This year, several countries in the region have been enduring heatwaves that have pushed temperatures beyond the 40°C (104°F) mark, particularly in popular tourist destinations like the Spanish coast, the Greek islands, and parts of Italy. These extreme temperatures have caused significant disruptions to local life, from power outages and water shortages to health emergencies and transportation delays.
However, it is not just the heat that has caused widespread devastation. The high temperatures have created the perfect conditions for wildfires to thrive, leading to the rapid spread of flames across vast swathes of forested land, coastal areas, and even urban centers. From the forests of Portugal to the island of Rhodes in Greece, fires have forced thousands of residents to evacuate their homes, and tourists have been urged to stay away from fire-prone areas. The damage to local infrastructure, including roads, airports, and hotels, has had a lasting impact on tourism, with many attractions temporarily closed or destroyed.
Impact on Southern Europe’s Tourism: A Shift in Demand
The impact of these extreme conditions on tourism has been immediate and profound. Traditionally, the Mediterranean has been one of the most sought-after summer destinations, with its sun-drenched beaches, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant cities attracting millions of international tourists every year. However, this year, Southern Europe is experiencing a sharp decline in tourism numbers, with travelers avoiding areas affected by heatwaves and wildfires.
Cancellations and Shifted Travel Plans
Tourists who had planned vacations in Spain, Italy, Greece, and Portugal have found themselves canceling or altering their travel plans, opting to travel to regions further north to escape the harsh weather conditions. For some, the desire for a relaxing beach vacation has been replaced by the need for cool, shaded getaways with outdoor activities that don’t involve risking heatstroke or battling the smoke-filled air. As a result, coastal resorts, beaches, and cities once flooded with tourists are now seeing far fewer visitors, and bookings are being diverted to alternative locations.
Even in areas not directly affected by wildfires, the scorching temperatures have made outdoor activities like sightseeing, hiking, and beach lounging less enjoyable, pushing travelers to explore cooler, more comfortable destinations.
Short-Term Economic Impact
The short-term economic effects on Southern Europe’s tourism industry are significant. With hotel bookings plummeting in affected regions, hospitality businesses are scrambling to recover from the downturn. Tourism-related businesses, from restaurants to transportation providers, have seen a sharp drop in sales, with many forced to reduce staff hours or even temporarily close their doors. In some extreme cases, entire resorts or attractions have been shut down due to safety concerns, further compounding the impact on local economies that depend heavily on tourism revenue.
On the other hand, regions unaffected by the extreme heat are experiencing a boom in tourism as travelers flock to cooler destinations. Northern European countries like Scandinavia, as well as parts of the UK and Ireland, are enjoying a surge in demand as tourists look for respite from the heat.
The Rise of “Coolcations”: A Northern Shift in Travel
With Southern Europe enduring the brunt of heatwaves and wildfires, an emerging trend has taken hold in the tourism industry: the growing appeal of “coolcations” – vacation destinations in cooler northern parts of Europe. Countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark are seeing a rise in bookings, with travelers seeking a break from the unrelenting heat of the Mediterranean. These destinations, often characterized by their lush forests, dramatic landscapes, and cooler climates, have become the go-to places for tourists looking to escape the sweltering heat.
Scandinavia: The Coolcation Capital
Scandinavia, with its moderate summer temperatures, has become the prime destination for those seeking an alternative to Southern Europe’s heat. Cities like Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm are seeing a surge in visitors, with travelers drawn to their cooler weather, rich cultural heritage, and outdoor offerings such as fjord cruises, hiking, and cycling.
The allure of Scandinavia’s cool, pristine landscapes has long been a draw for nature lovers, but now, in the wake of Southern Europe’s extreme temperatures, these countries are being seen as a viable alternative for those seeking a more comfortable vacation. Moreover, the unique blend of historic cities, cutting-edge design, and natural beauty makes Scandinavia an ideal destination for those looking to experience something different from the traditional beach holiday.
The UK and Ireland: A Welcome Respite
For many travelers, the UK and Ireland offer a welcome respite from the heat. With their moderate temperatures and abundant green spaces, these countries have become a favored destination for travelers seeking cooler climates. Cities like Edinburgh, London, and Dublin are seeing an uptick in visitors, with many tourists opting for cultural festivals, scenic countryside tours, and visits to iconic landmarks, all while enjoying the temperate summer weather.
In addition to the cooler weather, both the UK and Ireland are home to a rich cultural history and offer a wide range of outdoor activities, from hiking in the Scottish Highlands to exploring the stunning coastlines of Ireland. As temperatures in Southern Europe continue to rise, the UK and Ireland’s appeal as “coolcation” destinations is only expected to grow.
The Long-Term Effect of Climate Change on European Travel
While the immediate effects of heatwaves and wildfires are being felt across Southern Europe, the broader implications for European travel may be more lasting. As climate change continues to affect global weather patterns, Southern Europe is likely to experience even more frequent and intense heatwaves in the future. This will continue to shift travel patterns, with travelers seeking cooler regions and alternative vacation options.
Over the long term, destinations in the Mediterranean may need to adapt to the changing climate by investing in more sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure. This could include promoting eco-friendly tourism, introducing measures to reduce the environmental impact of tourism, and encouraging off-season travel to avoid the peak summer months. Destinations that can offer cooler, more comfortable conditions while preserving their cultural and natural beauty will be better positioned to attract tourists in a changing climate.
Conclusion: Southern Europe’s Travel Landscape in the Face of Extreme Weather
The wildfires and heatwaves currently devastating Southern Europe have highlighted the growing risks associated with climate change and its impact on global tourism. While these extreme weather events are disrupting tourism in the Mediterranean, they are also giving rise to a new trend in travel, with travelers increasingly seeking cooler destinations in northern Europe.
The rise of “coolcations” is reshaping the summer travel landscape, with Northern Europe emerging as the go-to destination for those in search of respite from the scorching heat. As climate change continues to affect weather patterns, both tourists and the tourism industry will need to adapt to these new realities, with a growing emphasis on sustainable travel and resilient destinations. In this changing landscape, those who can offer comfortable, sustainable, and climate-resilient experiences will thrive, while Southern Europe will need to continue evolving to meet the demands of an increasingly climate-conscious traveler.

Jennifer Aniston’s Baggy Jeans Are Perfect for Travel

Forget skinny jeans—today’s jeans philosophy is “the baggier, the better.” And while many might be reluctant to close the time capsule door on their beloved skinnies, some of us are sighing with relief that the current denim trend is comfy enough for travel. Restrictive, tight pants were never meant for hours of walking or plane-sitting in the first place. So, instead of holding onto trends past, we’re fully leaning into baggy silhouettes, using a recent look from Jennifer Aniston as inspiration for creating a comfortable jeans outfit.

Fresh off a romantic vacation in Mallorca, the Friends starlet was seen in Los Angeles sporting a basic grey tank top tucked into a pair of light-wash, wide-leg jeans—a late ‘90s look that Rachel Green definitely would have worn herself. She sported the baggy jeans with a pair of flat flip-flops, amping up the Y2K-era vibe even more. Since the source of Aniston’s retro-cool denim pants is still a mystery, we took to Amazon to search for similar styles that are just as worthy of suitcase space. While hunting, we found these equally spacious and soft-looking Levi’s jeans that reviewers love—and they’re on sale for just $60.

Featuring a mid-rise waist, these wide-leg jeans have a relaxed, baggy fit that allows you to move freely in them. Unlike some restrictive denim pants, these Levi’s 94 jeans are made with a cotton-blend denim that’s so soft, one reviewer says you “could literally wear them all day with no discomfort.”
“Calling all ‘90s kids,” another five-star reviewer wrote, “you’re going to be overwhelmed with nostalgia with these jeans.” Another happy customer said there just aren’t enough stars to show how much they love them, writing, “the fabric is so soft, lightweight with maybe a hint of stretch, and incredibly comfortable.” That means you could confidently wear these baggy jeans to the airport or while exploring a new city abroad, while never missing your sweats back home.
Amazon is stocked with plenty of other styles that mimic Aniston’s go-to baggy jeans, though. Keep scrolling for seven other Aniston-inspired jeans for travel, all under $50.

My Menu launches a free platform for 5,000 restaurants
DUBAI, UAE – My Menu, the global restaurant technology platform serving 4,500+ restaurants and 600+ hotels in 70 countries, announced the launch of its commission-free reservations and table management system, offered entirely free to 5,000 restaurants worldwide.
This bold move disrupts an industry dominated by high-fee reservation platforms, where independent and mid-sized restaurants often struggle under commission costs and high subscription prices. With My Menu’s new system, selected restaurants will be able to manage bookings, optimize table turnover, reduce no-shows, and build guest loyalty, without paying any fees.
More than a product launch, this is My Menu’s way of giving back to the industry that helped it grow.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, we offered free contactless menus to keep restaurants and their staff safe,” said Abhishek Bose, CEO & Founder of My Menu. “That goodwill took us from 300 to more than 4,500 restaurant clients worldwide. Today, as restaurants face rising costs, labor shortages, and the pressure to bring in more guests, we’re stepping in again to help, this time with reservations.”
What’s included for selected partner restaurants:
- Commission-Free Reservations: Seamless integration with Google, Zomato, Swiggy, and EazyDiner.
- Advanced Table Management: Smart tools to optimize seating and potentially double covers per meal period.
- Guest CRM & Marketing: Build loyalty with personalized experiences and data-driven insights.
- Full Support: Free setup, installation, and remote training for a smooth launch.
- Sustainability Tie-In: For every restaurant that joins, My Menu plants a tree in the My Menu Forest, allowing diners to contribute to climate action with every booking.
Who qualifies?
Casual dining, full-service restaurants that operate at least two meal periods (such as lunch and dinner) and value reservations. Quick-service restaurants generally do not qualify, as they rarely rely on table bookings.
“This is about more than technology,” added Bose. “We owe our success to the restaurant community, and it’s only fitting that we help them thrive in return. The more restaurants succeed, the more the entire dining ecosystem wins.”
Industry experts note that My Menu’s move could significantly shift the balance of power away from legacy platforms that charge high subscription fees or per-cover fees, creating a more sustainable future for restaurant operators.
