Research from the University of Manchester finds that luxury tourism in Africa often bypasses local economies, deepens inequality, and strains fragile ecosystems.

In East Africa, a lawsuit filed focusing on Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve seeks to block a new Ritz-Carlton safari lodge, accusing it of threatening pastoralist lands. 

Meanwhile, in Tanzania, protests over land evictions linked to hunting concessions have created deadly clashes. 

And across the continent, critics argue that “high-value, low-impact” has become more marketing slogan than lived reality.

Despite the challenges, organizations like Ecotourism Kenya, the country’s leading certification body, argue that luxury tourism can become more responsible, though the reality on the ground is complex.

TBO Co-Founder on $125 Million Classic Vacations Deal and Building U.S. Presence

India-based travel distribution company TBO Tek announced on Tuesday it is acquiring Classic Vacations, a California-based luxury travel wholesaler, in an all-cash deal worth up to $125 million.

Soon after the announcement, Skift spoke with Gaurav Bhatnagar, TBO’s co-founder and joint managing director, to learn what the deal means for the company’s global ambitions and for the U.S. luxury travel market.

“You can’t really claim to be a major player in luxury travel business without a significant U.S. presence,” Bhatnagar told Skift.

The seller, Arizona-based private equity firm Najafi Companies, has owned Classic since 2021 after acquiring it from Expedia.

Classic Vacations is a familiar name to many U.S. travel advisors. Founded in 1978, it built a reputation for curated holiday packages and high-touch service. Last year, the company reported $111 million in revenue and an operating pro

Denmark Street venues collaborate for day festival London

UK: Businesses located along Denmark Street in London have organised a series of live performances, talks, pop-ups and art exhibitions set to take place on 6 September 2025.

Throughout the day, guests will encounter over 20 live music performances along with talks hosted by musicians. 

The lineup includes:

  • Band Hot Property play at Thirteen, Chateau Denmark (4pm)
  • Guitarist Jay Mehler (Kasabian, Beady Eye) will share a talk and performance at No.Tom (6pm)
  • Pianist Jim Brickman performs live at Roland (6pm)
  • Guitarist Marc Hayward (Black Sabbath – The Ballet) performs an acoustic set at Dram (8pm)
  • Unsigned and independent live bands such as Muck Spreader, Doom Club, Silkarmour play at Farsight Gallery
  • Acoustic performances from Celeste Madden and Just Kids at Rough Trade
  • A talk with jewellery designer Hannah Martin, and tailor and menswear designer Tom Baker, moderated by writer and author Justin Quirk
  • Sixty Ink will offer an exclusive collection of flash tattoos inspired by the musical history of the street
  • DJ Amazonica (The Libertines, Grandmaster Flash & Machine Gun Kelly) performs at Thirteen, Chateau Denmark, throughout the evening

“From playing my first gig on Denmark Street, to working in the guitar shops over the years, for me, it all started here,” said Hayward, onstage guitarist Black Sabbath – The Ballet. “I have met so many amazing people which has led to playing gigs all over the world. To be kicking off such an array of music sessions on this iconic street is an amazing thing for the future of grassroots live music.”

Imran Hussain, chief marketing officer at Chateau Denmark, added: “This street has some of the most vibrant and creative minds in London – welcome to the next era of Denmark Street.”
