When it comes to unforgettable summer vacations, a place to travel for few other tourists get to set foot on stands head and shoulders above all the rest: Catania on Sicily’s eastern coast.

Boasting beautiful surrounds, great history and plenty to see, visitors to Catania can be sure of having plenty to do and a wide variety of sights to admire.

From the golden sand beaches and the colours of the burning Mount Etna to the tasteful and tastying sicilian cousine, Catania is contrasts, flavors and warm atmosphere at the same time.

It’s a place that ensures you don’t just take a vacation, but embark on a high-energy, thrill-a-minute summer adventure.

Travel to Catania’s Diverse Beaches

It’s summer in Catania and that means colourful beach life, thousands of tourists from all over the world enjoying the city’s many coastal faces. One big feature of Catania’s tourist scene is the diversity of the beaches, everyone offering something a little different for each one’s tastes. Palm-tree-lined Playa di Catania is a massive golden-sand beach that is great for sunbathing, swimming, and people watching if you like the classic sand beach experience. Situated a short drive from downtown, the beach is within easy reach and a fine place to unwind along the Mediterranean.

But Catania is not your average beach destination. For something a little different, travelers in search of one particular region’s volcanic beaches will be captivated. It has dark sand beaches, victims of the volcanic activity in the region, which are a stark contrast to the golden sands elsewhere. There is an otherworldly beauty in these beaches and they make an unusual view for visitors to tour Sicily’s rocky legacy. The combination of volcanic rocks and black sands is the product of centuries of eruptions of Mount Etna, so is a highlight for fans of nature and geology.

Not only are the beaches of Catania beautiful, but they also offer a wide range of services to make your day at the beach as comfortable and fun as possible. Whether you are seeking a spot to bask in the sun, splash about, and eat fresh seafood out at a beachfront eatery, Catania’s shores have an option for all tastes. Best of all, these beaches are very close to the city which means you can enjoy long days at the seaside before heading back to the urban hustle and bustle of Catania.

Trip to Mount Etna: An Active Volcano

A trip to Catania would not be the same without visiting majestic Mount Etna, Europe’s highest volcano. At 3,329 meters (10,922 feet), Mount Etna is Europe’s tallest active volcano, and looms large over the city of Catania. This impressive volcano is an incredible sight and there are many ways for visitors to discover a little more about the history of the landscape.

For the more adventurous hikers, at Mt Etna you will find a selection of hiking paths from easy walks to challenging treks to the top. Trekking up the volcano offers awesome panoramic vistas over the surrounding countryside, with sweeping views of the fertile plain below and the glistening Mediterranean and its islands in the distance. Those seeking a truly unforgettable experience can jump on a cable car to the upper craters and can even join one of the guided tours to get up close and personal with the volcano’s fiery fury. The Parco dell’Etna, a regional park, offers insightful excursions that provide the opportunity for visitors to ascend from one of the volcano’s many environments to another, be it a quiet stroll through a forest filled with towering foliage, or a hair-raising hike across rough volcanic rock.

Alongside its outdoor thrills, Mount Etna is the dream location for science nerds and professional and amateur photographers alike. The volcano erupts often so nature does the work for you with its lava flows and ash clouds providing dramatic shots against the canvas of the Sicilian sky. Not just something that gets added to your layover in Catania to make your trip feel complete, it’s truly the opportunity to witness the force of nature in all its unadulterated glory.

A Tour of Sicily with Recipes

More than beaches and volcanoes, Catania is also a culinary treasure for travelers. Sicilian food is varied, tasty and full of flavors and Catania is one of the top places to enjoy it to the fullest. The city’s cuisine is a reflection of its history, with many cultures having influenced the island over thousands of years, from the Greeks, Romans and Arabs, to the Spanish. The result is a mesmerising selection of plates that combine fresh produce, bright spices and pioneering culinary practices.

It’s the magic of Catania that it’s impossible to leave the table hungry. Not to mention that the eating is a way of life here, not just a task for survival. Any visitor must try arancini, a local dish of deep-fried rice balls stuffed with meat, cheese or vegetables. These delicious local specialities are found in the markets and eateries throughout the city so you can have a truly authentic tasting of Catania’s street food culture. Granita is the ultimate treat for the sweet toothed and ideal to cool off in the hot summer heat. Granita is made of crushed ice and flavored with lemon, almonds or strawberries, and is a cool-sweet treat perfect for summer.

Another attraction for food-loving travelers are Catania’s markets. In the heart of the city, is the lively Mercato di Catania where you will experience a feast for your senses; fresh fruit & veg, seafood, meats and local treats. It’s an ideal base for travelers to get closer to the workaday, yet complex, Sicilian culture, mix with locals and taste the freshest produce.

Tourist Attractions in Catania: Historic, Cultural and Natural Highlights

Catania has more to offer than its beauty and culinary wonders that make it so desirable as a travel destination. There is plenty of history and culture that you must see and they will tell you about that. Catania’s old town, a Unesco World Heritage site, is a higgledy-piggledy mix of gorgeous Baroque architecture, bustling piazzas and lovely, narrow streets crammed with cafes and shops. Must-see sites for tourists in the city are the Piazza del Duomo, where the landmark Elephant Fountain and the beautiful Catania Cathedral can be found.

For nature enthusiasts, Catania is close to even more natural wonders. A few minutes drive out of the city are the Alcantara Gorges – an incredible natural phenomenon formed by eruptions. The picturesque basalt rock formations and crystal-clear waters of the gorges make a great backdrop for outdoor activities, from hiking and swimming to picnicking.

Conclusion: Travel to Catania for a Full Sicilian Experience

Summer in Catania An amazing summer adventure is waiting for you in Catania!I believe Catania lies at a crossroads between the beauty of the Sicilian sea, the richness of the culture and the tastiness of its cuisine. Whether you want to chill out on the beaches, get your adrenalin pumping on the slopes of Europe’s biggest volcano, or spend the night with one foot in the city’s booming nightlife and the other in its blink-and-you’ll-miss-it decadence, Catania has it all. With hearty locals, a beautiful landscape and opportunities to explore galore, Catania lays it all out for the kind of traveler coming for Sicily.

MUSTANG: An eight-kilometer cycle trail has been completed connecting Gharpajhong-4 Jomsom to Baragung Muktikshetra-5 Dharkajung in Mustang.

The Tourism and Industry Office, Mustang, confirmed that the trail was built with a budget of Rs 2 million to promote tourism and encourage longer tourist stays in the region.
