Shin Nihonkai Ferry: Reviving Regional Japan Through Sustainable Sea Travel, Know More
Tuesday, July 8, 2025
Shin Nihonkai Ferry has long been a major catalyst for connecting Japan’s regions by sea, but its latest venture is more than just transportation. President Yasuo Iritani speaks exclusively about how the ferry firm is marrying heritage and tourism to develop sustainable “slow travel”, revitalizing rural areas, and offering luxury travel options for foreign and local visitors alike.
As Japan continues to recover from the pandemic and sees a significant influx of international visitors—reaching a record-breaking 37 million inbound tourists last year—Shin Nihonkai Ferry is playing a key role in the revitalization of regions traditionally overlooked in favor of bustling metropolitan hubs like Tokyo and Osaka. The company’s ferry services, particularly in the Sea of Japan region, provide a unique opportunity for travelers to explore the lesser-known but culturally rich corners of the country, offering a slower, more immersive form of travel.
The Growing Appeal of Japan as a Destination
Reflecting on the factors that make Japan such an attractive destination for travelers, Iritani points to several critical elements: the weakened yen, Japan’s reputation for safety, and the Japanese government’s effective tourism promotion efforts. The depreciation of the yen has made Japan a more affordable destination, encouraging visitors, especially from the U.S. and Europe, to explore the country more extensively. Coupled with Japan’s low crime rates and its relative distance from global conflicts, safety continues to be a major factor drawing international tourists to its shores.
Iritani highlights that while the ferry industry in Japan has faced competition from the rise of low-cost airlines, there has been a noticeable shift towards sustainable travel. This trend has fueled renewed interest in sea travel, especially among European and American tourists. “More travelers are paying attention to the journey itself,” he explains, noting that many are now embracing the slower pace of sea travel as a way to experience the country in a more relaxed, thoughtful manner.
Sea Travel as a Bridge Between Japan’s Regions
Historically, Japan’s maritime routes were central to the nation’s trade and cultural exchange. Shin Nihonkai Ferry is proud to honor that heritage, especially with its routes following the Kitamae-bune trade network. Operating from the Edo period to the Meiji period, these ships transported goods such as fish and seaweed, vital to Japan’s economy. Iritani sees the company’s role today as a continuation of that legacy, with a focus on connecting regional Japan through modern, sustainable sea travel.
The company’s routes, including services between Kansai and Hokkaido, as well as the Sea of Japan, aim to reverse the trend of economic centralization in cities like Tokyo and Osaka. “We believe it’s time to strengthen regional connections and encourage the movement of both people and goods,” says Iritani, highlighting the cultural and economic significance of reconnecting Japan’s coastal regions.
A Shift in Travel Mindset: Embracing the Journey
For many travelers, the focus has shifted from simply reaching the destination as quickly as possible to enjoying the journey itself. This shift aligns perfectly with Shin Nihonkai Ferry’s concept of slow travel, where the process of traveling—whether it’s the scenic vistas over the Sea of Japan or the local cuisine and onboard activities—is just as important as the destination. Iritani recognizes that for Western travelers, in particular, slow travel is an appealing aspect of their visit to Japan. They seek a more immersive, reflective experience rather than just ticking off landmarks.
The company is working to cater to this growing interest by offering travelers more than just transport from one port to another. The onboard experience includes activities such as seasonal cuisine prepared with locally sourced ingredients, outdoor baths, and cultural experiences such as Japanese paper crafts. For many, the ferry journey itself becomes an essential part of their Japanese adventure.
Targeting High-Value and International Travelers
While Shin Nihonkai Ferry remains committed to serving a wide range of travelers, it has increasingly focused on attracting high-value customers, particularly those looking for luxury experiences. Through partnerships with luxury hotels, the company offers exclusive small-group tours, including stays at premium hotels in Hokkaido, where affluent customers can enjoy premium journeys. These tours, priced between 500,000 to 1 million yen, provide an elevated travel experience that combines sightseeing with high-end hospitality.
Iritani acknowledges the importance of maintaining a balance between serving the high-end market and catering to budget-conscious travelers, recognizing that both segments are essential to the business’s success. He notes that while the company does not focus on low-cost tours, it remains dedicated to offering a range of experiences that align with travelers’ varied interests and budgets.
Building Synergies: Hotels and Ferry Services
Shin Nihonkai Ferry operates three hotels across Japan, and Iritani explains how the company creates synergies between its ferry routes and its hospitality services. By providing brochures on the ferries and online, the company highlights local attractions and encourages small-group tours that combine both ferry travel and hotel stays. This integrated approach ensures that travelers can fully immerse themselves in the regions they visit, making it a more enriching experience.
Looking to the Future: Partnerships and Regional Connections
As the company continues to strengthen its regional offerings, Iritani emphasizes that Shin Nihonkai Ferry is always open to new partnerships, especially those that align with its vision of sustainable tourism and regional revitalization. While there are no specific international expansion plans at the moment, the company continues to strengthen its existing routes, including its long-standing service between Japan and Korea.
Taking into account his legacy and his future plans, Iritani reaffirms his ultimate goal is to leave a healthy legacy behind his successor by continuing to build on the success of the company and to remain a catalyst for Japan’s regional economies’ renaissance through gradual, sustainable travel. “For now, I am doing my best before that day comes,” he reflects, demonstrating a quiet determination to continue to guide the company toward its goals.
For travelers seeking to experience Japan in a more thoughtful, sustainable way, Shin Nihonkai Ferry offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore the country’s diverse regions by sea—combining the best of tradition, travel, and modern tourism in one unforgettable journey.

OYO Travelopedia 2025 Now Observes A Surge In Indian Travelers Heading To Visa Friendly Destinations
Saturday, July 19, 2025
OYO International Summer Holidays Travelopedia 2025 reveals the changing preferences in the travel patterns of Indian travelers. The report points to a significant 65% increase in bookings to destinations where visa restrictions have recently been relaxed or lifted – indicating a wider trend towards stress-free global travel. This change is an attempt to better meet the changing travel needs of Indian travelers in Asia and beyond for more accessible and convenient escapes.
Dubai: The Family-Centric Destination of Choice
Dubai, long a popular hotspot for luxury tourism, has witnessed an exceptional rise in bookings, particularly among Indian families. This uptick, with a threefold increase in family travelers, is largely attributed to the UAE’s introduction of a five-year multiple-entry visa for Indian nationals. This move has made Dubai significantly more accessible, especially for business travelers seeking convenience and family-oriented tourists looking for affordable yet premium experiences.
Dubai’s appeal lies in its unique blend of modernity and cultural experiences, from towering skyscrapers like the Burj Khalifa to immersive cultural attractions such as the Dubai Museum. The city’s commitment to providing accessible luxury experiences for Indian tourists further reinforces its position as a top destination.
The shift in travel trends also ties in with the broader picture of increased air connectivity and improved visa policies across the Middle East, a region that has seen considerable growth in Indian tourist arrivals, with Dubai leading the way. With direct flights from major Indian cities and the introduction of more affordable airfares, the UAE’s capital city continues to be a beacon for families seeking both relaxation and adventure.
Bali: The Go-To Destination for Honeymooners and Couples
Bali has solidified its position as one of the most romantic and exotic destinations for Indian honeymooners. Known for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and serene landscapes, the Indonesian island remains a top contender for couples seeking an unforgettable getaway. The island’s flexible visa policies, including visa-on-arrival and visa-exemption options for many Indian nationals, have further fueled its popularity.
In addition to its natural beauty, Bali offers an impressive array of luxury resorts, private villas, and fine dining experiences, making it an attractive destination for high-end travelers. The increasing number of Indian couples choosing Bali also reflects broader travel trends in Southeast Asia, where the region’s blend of cultural richness and affordability resonates with middle and upper-middle-class Indian tourists.
Bangkok: The Gateway to Cultural Exploration
Bangkok continues to captivate Indian travelers, offering a dynamic blend of ancient temples, vibrant street markets, and contemporary shopping experiences. The Thai capital remains a staple in the itineraries of tourists seeking both adventure and culture. The destination’s visa-on-arrival policy for Indian nationals has bolstered its position as a go-to location for short cultural escapes.
Thailand, and Bangkok specifically, is benefitting from the overall surge in Indian tourist numbers across Southeast Asia. With budget airlines offering affordable travel options and increased flight routes between India and Thailand, Bangkok has become even more accessible. This, paired with Bangkok’s status as a cultural hub, attracts visitors interested in exploring temples, cuisine, and bustling city life—all within a relatively short travel window.
The Shift Toward Premium Travel: A New Era of Indian Tourism
One of the standout findings from OYO’s Travelopedia 2025 is the notable rise in demand for premium accommodations among Indian travelers. This trend aligns with the increasing affluence of India’s middle class, which is looking to upgrade their travel experiences. Premium hotel brands like OYO’s Sunday and Palette are expanding their footprint, with 13 new properties added in the first half of 2025, particularly in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
For instance, OYO’s new additions in Dubai and Jakarta cater to the growing demand for luxury at affordable rates, offering travelers a taste of high-end experiences without the hefty price tag. These developments reflect a broader trend in Asia, where luxury tourism is seeing exponential growth, particularly among Indian travelers who are now prioritizing premium stays as part of their international holiday packages.
Shorter Trips, Bigger Experiences: The Rise of Quick Getaways
Indian tourists are increasingly opting for shorter vacations, often ranging between 3–7 days, when traveling to destinations in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. This trend is indicative of a desire for quick, immersive travel experiences that provide both relaxation and adventure. In contrast, long-haul destinations in Europe and the US are still favored for longer stays of 10–15 days, but Southeast Asia and the Middle East now dominate as go-to spots for spontaneous, yet fulfilling, escapes.
The shift toward shorter trips aligns with the overall growth of regional tourism in Asia. With budget airlines making travel more accessible and visa policies becoming more relaxed, Indian tourists are now able to plan last-minute vacations without the need for extended planning or excessive time off work. This, combined with the appeal of close proximity and affordability, has transformed the travel patterns of many Indians, leading to a dramatic increase in bookings for destinations like Dubai, Bali, and Bangkok.
Destination Weddings and Digital Nomads: New Travel Niches Emerge
Bali and Dubai are not only gaining ground as family destinations but are also becoming increasingly popular for destination weddings. With picturesque settings, luxurious resorts, and all-inclusive wedding packages, these locations offer everything that modern couples need for a dream wedding abroad. Both destinations are seeing a rise in bookings for weddings, with Indian couples seeking an intimate yet grand celebration in exotic surroundings.
Simultaneously, Malaysia and Indonesia are attracting digital nomads who seek a balance between work and leisure. The region’s affordable living costs, reliable internet, and growing digital nomad communities in cities like Bali and Jakarta are reshaping the travel landscape. These destinations now offer a perfect blend of work-friendly environments and leisure, making them ideal for long-term stays or short retreats where professionals can work remotely while exploring new cultures.
Conclusion: A New Era of Indian Travel Preferences
OYO’s Travelopedia 2025 reveals an exciting and transformative phase in Indian tourism, where convenience, cultural immersion, and luxury experiences dominate the travel landscape. With a 65% increase in bookings to visa-friendly destinations, Indian travelers are shaping the future of international tourism by opting for destinations that offer seamless travel experiences.
The shift in Indian travel habits is attributed to changes in visa policies, better air connectivity, and growing demand for luxury travel that is accessible and value for money. Physical environment aside, Indian travelers, on the lookout for adventure, relaxation and culture, are likely to consider Dubai and Bali in Southeast Asia, along with Bangkok, in the Months ahead.
