6,000-plus went on spiritual tours organised by TN govt | Chennai News

Chennai: More than 6,000 devotees from across TN were part of a govt-sponsored spiritual tours in 2024-25, which cost more than 5crore on pilgrimages to Rameswaram, Kasi, Arupadai Veedu, Amman shrines in Aadi, and Vaishnavite temples in Purattasi. The schemes, designed to ease financial burdens for senior citizens and devotees, are set to cover at least 6,500 more pilgrims this year. Officials said state’s spiritual tour programme not only fosters religious devotion but also ensures accessibility for the elderly and economically weaker sections. “Many senior citizens who live alone call us seeking help to visit pilgrim centres. We include them in these tours,” said HR&CE minister P K Sekar Babu. The Rameswaram-Kasi yatra alone benefited 920 senior citizens over the past three years at a cost of 2.3crore. This year, 600 more devotees will join the journey, supported by 1.5crore. In the Arupadai Veedu tour, 2,015 devotees participated last year at a cost of 2.14crore, while 2,000 are scheduled to go this year with 2.50crore earmarked. Similarly, pilgrimages during Aadi and Purattasi months attracted more than 2,000 devotees each, with govt funding doubling to 50lakh for each category this year.“On the international front, subsidies for Muktinath (Nepal) and Manasarovar (China) have been increased. Muktinath subsidy rose from 20,000 to 30,000 per pilgrim, while the Manasarovar grant was doubled to 1,00,000, though travel has been restricted for the past four years,” said Sekar Babu.

Prayagraj to be promoted as ‘City of Temple Corridors’

The initiative, driven by the Uttar Pradesh government, seeks to restore and highlight the city’s temple heritage. The project will not only focus on the better-known shrines such as the Bade Hanuman Mandir, Kalyani Devi, Alopi Devi and Mankameshwar Temple, but also on linking them through accessible corridors designed to improve visitor experience. These corridors are intended to mirror successful models such as the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Varanasi, which has transfor med temple tourism in recent years.
Prayagraj’s rebranding is as much about infrastructure as it is about identity. Alongside improved pathways and amenities, the scheme aims to weave the city’s historic sites into a cohesive narrative that highlights its role as both a religious centre and a crucible of India’s modern history. It was here that leaders of the freedom movement — including Motilal Nehru and Jawaharlal Nehru — established their base, making Prayagraj a city where the sacred and the political have long intersected.
