Marriott hotel brands: An overview

Marriott Bonvoy has over 30 hotel brands in more than 10,000 global destinations. While some other hotel loyalty programs have opted to bring properties from acquired brands into their existing brands, Marriott Bonvoy has generally not been hesitant to add a new brand to its program. Hence, the number of Marriott brands will likely continue to grow.
But for now, there are 37 Marriott hotel brands, including its new Series by Marriott brand. Here’s what you should know about each Marriott brand.
Marriott brands overview
Marriott Bonvoy splits its brands into four categories:
- Luxury: Edition, JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, The Luxury Collection and W Hotels
- Premium: Autograph Collection Hotels, Delta Hotels, Design Hotels, Gaylord Hotels, Le Meridien, Marriott Hotels, Marriott Vacation Clubs, MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy, Renaissance Hotels, Sheraton, Tribute Portfolio and Westin Hotels & Resorts
- Select: AC Hotels, Aloft Hotels, City Express by Marriott, Courtyard by Marriott, Fairfield by Marriott, Four Points by Sheraton, Four Points Flex by Sheraton, Moxy Hotels, Protea Hotels and SpringHill Suites
- Longer stays: Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, Element, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott Executive Apartments, Residence Inn, Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy, StudioRes and TownePlace Suites
These categories give you a general idea of the type of service and accommodation to expect at properties within each brand.
I’ll discuss each brand in more detail in the following sections. Marriott hasn’t placed its new Series by Marriott brand into any of these four categories yet, but I assume it will fall into the Select category and will hence discuss it in that section of this article.
You’ll usually earn an elite qualifying night per night stayed and 10 points per dollar spent; however, I’ll note the brands that earn at lower rates.
Luxury Marriott brands
The Marriott Bonvoy portfolio includes six luxury brands.
Edition
Edition is a Marriott brand focused on being a collection of individualized hotels that offer a curated taste of the locale alongside exceptional style and service. The brand claims to offer a new generation of luxury, but one of the most iconic aspects of the brand for me is the faux fur throw that usually appears somewhere in each room.

TPG coverage of Edition:
JW Marriott
JW Marriott’s motto is “stay in the moment,” and the brand focuses on offering guests ways to be mindful, present, nourished and together.
TPG coverage of JW Marriott:
Ritz-Carlton
Ritz-Carlton is known for its personalized service and thoughtful amenities. The brand strives to create extraordinary moments for its guests.
Properties often offer an impressive Ritz-Carlton Club to those staying in club-level rooms, but you won’t get access to it as a Marriott elite status benefit. However, if you have The Ritz-Carlton™ Credit Card, you can use the club-level certificates you get as a perk of the card to upgrade select rates to a club-level room at properties that offer these room types.
The information for The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
In addition to standard Ritz-Carlton hotels and resorts, there’s also The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.
TPG coverage of Ritz-Carlton:
St. Regis Hotels & Resorts
St. Regis is one of the top two Marriott brands, competing for the top spot with the Ritz-Carlton brand.
The St. Regis motto is “the best address,” but the brand is well known for its signature rituals. For example, each St. Regis property prepares a locally inspired bloody mary cocktail. You’ll also find afternoon tea, midnight supper and evening rituals at each St. Regis property.
TPG coverage of St. Regis Hotels & Resorts:
The Luxury Collection
Marriott groups The Luxury Collection into its set of luxury brands, even though it’s a collection. The main aspect connecting properties in The Luxury Collection is a passion to help guests become familiar with the destination and connect with local culture.
Two of my favorite Marriott stays have been at properties belonging to The Luxury Collection: Al Maha, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, Dubai and The Naka Island, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Phuket in Thailand. In both cases, I learned more about the destination through resort activities and conversations with friendly staff members.
TPG coverage of The Luxury Collection:
- Paraiso de la Bonita, a Luxury Collection Resort, Riviera Maya, Adult All-Inclusive
- Sanctuary Cap Cana, a Luxury Collection Resort, Dominican Republic, Adult All-Inclusive
- Taaktana, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Labuan Bajo
- The Hythe, a Luxury Collection Resort, Vail
- The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart
W Hotels
W Hotels is a luxury lifestyle brand focused on design and experiences. Many travelers love W and its trendy, youthful vibe.
TPG coverage of W Hotels:
Premium Marriott brands
Marriott offers 12 premium brands that are a step below the previously discussed luxury brands. However, most premium Marriott brands still offer full-service properties with well-appointed rooms, well-stocked gyms and other amenities.
Autograph Collection Hotels
Autograph Collection is a collection of distinctive independent hotels that strive to offer memorable stays and unique perspectives.
TPG coverage of Autograph Collection Hotels:
- Asher Adams, Autograph Collection
- Cotton House Hotel, Autograph Collection
- Domes of Elounda, Autograph Collection
- Grand Bohemian Lodge Asheville, Autograph Collection
- Hotel Palacio de Santa Paula, Autograph Collection
- Planet Hollywood Cancun, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort
- Querencia de Sevilla, Autograph Collection
- Royalton Antigua, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort
- The Inn at Celebration, Autograph Collection
- The Louie, A Davenport Hotel, Autograph Collection
- The Shelbourne, Autograph Collection
Delta Hotels
The motto of the Delta Hotels brand is “simple made perfect.” This brand is relatively basic compared to other premium Marriott brands, but it focuses on offering things such as workspaces, solid food and simple yet seamless service.
This focus on simplicity extends to the brand’s Delta Pantry lounges, which you can access with select room types or as a Marriott Platinum Elite member or higher. They offer self-serve snacks and drinks.

Design Hotels
Design Hotels is made up of independent, design-driven hotels rooted in locality and culture.
I recently stayed at my first Design Hotel, the Ion Adventure Hotel, Nesjavellir, a Member of Design Hotels, after seeing it highlighted on Marriott’s website many times. This hotel is small and relatively isolated, but it fits perfectly into its remote landscape.

Gaylord Hotels
Gaylord Hotels’ motto is “making moments together extraordinary.” Most properties offer impressive garden atriums, water parks and pools to help families and friends spend memorable time together.
You’ll find various dining options and entertainment on-site at Gaylord Hotels, so you don’t need to leave the property for a well-rounded family vacation.
TPG coverage of Gaylord Hotels:
Le Meridien
Le Meridien hotels and resorts often feature a modern, European-inspired design. Instead of a lobby, guests find a Le Meridien Hub with flexible areas to gather and socialize. In Le Meriden Hubs, you can purchase craft coffee during the day and cocktails at night.
Many Le Meridien properties also offer chic conference and meeting spaces.

Marriott Hotels
Marriott Hotels offers modern, thoughtful designs in a familiar, inviting setting. Most properties in the Marriott Hotels brand offer a great room perfect for connecting with others, working or unwinding with an evening cocktail.
TPG coverage of Marriott Hotels:
Marriott Vacation Clubs
The Marriott Vacation Clubs is a collection of Marriott Vacation Club, Sheraton Vacation Club and Westin Vacation Club properties in both resort and city destinations.
Properties in these brands usually offer spacious villas, on-site activities and family-friendly amenities. You can become an owner of properties in these Marriott Vacation Clubs, but you can also book stays using Marriott points or cash without becoming an owner.

MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy
The MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy lets you book participating MGM Resorts destinations through Marriott Bonvoy. This means you can earn and redeem Marriott points for stays at select MGM Resorts.
TPG coverage of MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy:
Renaissance Hotels
Renaissance Hotels are designed to help you explore the neighborhood around you. Properties usually provide on-site Navigators who can help you discover local events and exhibitions.
TPG coverage of Renaissance Hotels:
Sheraton
The Sheraton brand motto is “where the world comes together.” Indeed, Sheraton properties in more than 70 countries are often well equipped to host conferences, meetings and events.
Most Sheraton properties offer comfortable public areas with various seating types — including a common table and booths — well suited for conversations, work, drinks and other gatherings.
TPG coverage of Sheraton:
Tribute Portfolio
The Tribute Portfolio brand is a collection of independent hotels and resorts with striking designs and the ability to connect guests with the places they visit.
When I think of the Tribute Portfolio, the Corendon Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel immediately comes to mind. This hotel overlooks a retired KLM 747 and offers daily tours inside the aircraft. I highly recommend booking a tour since doing so will let you sit in the seats, check out the crew rest and even see the black box.
TPG coverage of Tribute Portfolio:
Westin Hotels & Resorts
Westin properties often offer amenities and activities focused on well-being. The brand is known for its Westin Heavenly Bed and lavender balm, which help you “Sleep Well.”
Many properties also offer affordable gear lending kits and have staff who lead group runs. Most Westin properties provide healthy dining options via an “Eat Well” menu as well.
TPG coverage of Westin Hotels & Resorts:
Select Marriott brands
Marriott also offers 10 select brands that offer fewer services and amenities at a lower cost. I’ll also discuss the new Series by Marriott brand in this section, as I expect Marriott will eventually consider it a select brand.
AC Hotels
The AC Hotels brand provides purposefully designed rooms and public areas. Rooms often feel sparse but are usually functional. You’ll find European-inspired food-and-beverage offerings at AC Hotels.
TPG coverage of AC Hotels:
Aloft Hotels
Aloft Hotels offers playful, industrial-chic properties that are “different by design” (as described in the Aloft Hotels motto). Many Aloft Hotels are dog-friendly, and some offer Camp Aloft amenities for children.
You can buy cocktails and snacks at the XYZ bar, swim at the pool, play billiards in a public area and enjoy Drybar amenities in your room.
City Express by Marriott
City Express properties offer practical guest rooms and lobbies suitable for coworking. Plus, all guests can enjoy complimentary breakfast made from local ingredients at City Express by Marriott, City Express Junior by Marriott, City Express Suites by Marriott and City Express Plus by Marriott hotels.
Unfortunately, you’ll only earn 5 base points per dollar and one elite night credit per two qualifying nights at City Express.
Related: Marriott is bringing its City Express brand to the US and Canada
Courtyard by Marriott
Properties in the Courtyard brand usually offer flexible lobby spaces, on-site bistros for morning and evening meals, 24-hour gyms and other amenities such as pools or outdoor patios. Rooms usually feature plush bedding and flexible workspaces.
Fairfield by Marriott
Fairfield by Marriott properties provide comfortable rooms, flexible lobby spaces for working and relaxing, 24-hour fitness centers and markets with snacks and essentials.
Some Fairfield properties also offer pools and outdoor spaces. And as long as you’re staying at a Fairfield outside of the Asia-Pacific region, you’ll enjoy hot breakfast each morning as part of your stay.
Four Points by Sheraton
Four Points properties usually serve locally crafted beer on tap and offer comfortable rooms. I’ve enjoyed several Four Points properties outside the U.S., including in Bogota, Colombia; Seoul, South Korea; and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Each of these properties featured thoughtful amenities and comfortable rooms at modest rates.
Four Points Flex by Sheraton
Four Points Flex by Sheraton (originally introduced as Four Points Express) offers comfortable rooms at a low price. You can purchase a local breakfast, but you won’t find many other amenities at Four Points Flex by Sheraton properties. Unfortunately, you’ll only earn 5 base points per dollar and one elite night credit per two qualifying nights at Four Points Flex by Sheraton.
Moxy Hotels
The Moxy Hotels brand offers a fun, playful common area with plenty of space to work and relax. You’ll check in at the bar, where you’ll usually get a welcome drink. Later in your stay, you can order drinks and snacks from the bar. You’ll find games, often including foosball and board games, scattered about the common spaces.
Moxy Hotels won the TPG Award for Best Affordable Hotel Brand in 2023. But the downside of Moxy is that the rooms are often surprisingly small and usually don’t have a real chair, closet or desk. However, I’ll still stay at Moxy Hotels when the price (or award rate) is right.
TPG coverage of Moxy Hotels:
Protea Hotels
Protea Hotels is the largest hospitality brand in Africa. Most properties offer locally inspired designs, full-service restaurants and meeting spaces. Guest rooms are usually comfortable, but they vary significantly across the brand. Unfortunately, you’ll only earn one elite night credit per two qualifying nights and 5 base points per dollar spent at Protea Hotels.
Series by Marriott
Series by Marriott is the newest Marriott Bonvoy brand. It is designed to bring midscale and upscale regional brands under the Marriott Bonvoy umbrella while still letting these brands maintain their identity. However, guests can expect essentials like free Wi-Fi, coffee and tea during their stays.
We don’t yet know how Series by Marriott will participate in Marriott Bonvoy, including earning rates and elite benefits. However, we do know that Concept Hospitality Private Limited’s flagship brands — The Fern, The Fern Residency and The Fern Habitat — will join Series by Marriott, though we don’t yet have a timeline.
SpringHill Suites
SpringHill Suites offers slightly larger rooms with desks, couches (sometimes with trundle beds) and West Elm decorations.
As I originally wrote this article, I was sitting at a comfortable desk in the SpringHill Suites Boston Logan Airport Revere Beach. SpringHill Suites properties also offer complimentary breakfast to all guests.

Marriott brands for longer stays
Marriott Bonvoy also offers eight brands designed for longer stays. Properties in these brands often offer in-room kitchenettes, additional space and less-frequent housekeeping services.
Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy
Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy offers private bedrooms, a separate living room, a full kitchen and an in-unit washer and dryer in each accommodation. There’s a host on-site, and you’ll find a 24-hour fitness center. However, you’ll only earn 5 base points per dollar spent at Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy locations.

Element
Element hotels are extended-stay hotels with a wellness focus. You’ll find bikes to borrow at Element locations, as well as a 24-hour self-service laundry facility, a motion fitness center, a Restore pantry with snacks and drinks, and nature-inspired spaces. Breakfast is complimentary at Element hotels outside of the Asia-Pacific region. When staying at most Element properties, you can enjoy a complimentary glass of organic wine or beer at Relax evening receptions.
Element hotels offer standard guest rooms, studio suites and one-bedroom suites, each with filtered water, a fully equipped kitchen and spacious closets. These hotels also welcome dogs that weigh 40 pounds or less. However, you’ll only earn 5 base points per dollar spent at Element locations.

Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy
Through the Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy platform, you can book homes in over 100 destinations throughout the U.S., Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America.
All the homes are professionally cleaned and inspected, so you can avoid some of the issues you might otherwise face when renting a vacation home through other platforms. I’ve stayed at two different Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy properties in Europe and found both stays went smoothly. Unfortunately, you’ll only earn 5 base points per dollar spent at Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy locations.

Marriott Executive Apartments
Marriott Executive Apartments serve as temporary housing in 16 countries, including China, India and Thailand. Apartment sizes range from studios to three bedrooms, and on-site amenities include 24-hour security, a social area, a fitness center and a business center.
Unfortunately, you’ll only earn one elite night credit for every three qualifying nights and only 2.5 base points per dollar spent at Marriott Executive Apartments locations. You also won’t enjoy elite benefits when staying at Marriott Executive Apartments locations.
Residence Inn
Residence Inn properties offer spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites with full kitchens and plenty of room to spread out.
You’ll find a modern fitness center, free grocery delivery, complimentary hot breakfast and a 24-hour market at most Residence Inn locations. Unfortunately, you’ll only earn 5 base points per dollar spent at Residence Inn locations.
Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy
Through Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy, you can book apartments and boutique hotels in over 40 cities, including London, Los Angeles and New York City. Sonder prides itself on each property’s uniqueness, but you’ll always find keyless entry, fast Wi-Fi and a 24-hour digital concierge. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll only earn 5 base points per dollar spent at Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy locations.
StudioRes
StudioRes is Marriott’s most basic extended-stay option. StudioRes properties offer a refrigerator, a stove top and a microwave in each studio, but guests must bring their own cookware, dishes and utensils. You can bring your pets to StudioRes properties, and there are on-site self-serve laundry facilities and a gym at each property. However, housekeeping is only offered on a weekly basis.
Unfortunately, you won’t earn any elite night credits on StudioRes stays and just 4 base points per dollar spent.
TownePlace Suites
TownePlace Suites properties are usually a step below Residence Inn properties. However, each TownePlace Suites location still offers hot breakfast and spacious suites with full kitchens. Unfortunately, you’ll only earn 5 base points per dollar spent at TownePlace Suites locations.
Bottom line
The positive side of Marriott having 37 brands is that you have a good idea of what to expect when you book a property belonging to a specific brand. Know, though, that it can be difficult to keep track of what each of the 37 brands offers, including what types of benefits are available if you have Marriott elite status. For example, I often have to reference my article on Marriott breakfast benefits before booking a hotel to see whether I can expect breakfast during my stay as a Titanium Elite member.

AI Travel Revolution: Must-Have Guide to the Best Experience
Experience the AI travel revolution firsthand as smart technology transforms trip planning into a personalized, effortless adventure. Discover how cutting-edge tools like cheQin.ai are reshaping the way we explore the world with tailored itineraries and real-time travel insights.

How AI is Changing the Way We Travel: The Next Frontier
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming nearly every facet of our lives, and travel is no exception. The integration of AI into travel technology is revolutionizing how we plan, book, and experience trips, offering smarter, more personalized, and efficient solutions. From virtual concierges to smart travel planning tools and cutting-edge innovations like cheQin.ai, AI is heralding a new era in the travel industry. This article dives deep into how AI is reshaping our journeys, what new tools are emerging, and what future trends travelers and businesses alike should watch.
A Look at New AI Tools Revolutionizing Travel
The travel landscape was once dominated by traditional agencies and manual planning, often resulting in generic recommendations and cumbersome booking processes. Today, AI tools are changing that narrative dramatically.
Innovative platforms like cheQin.ai exemplify these advances by leveraging machine learning algorithms and data analytics to provide highly personalized travel ideas. This technology can analyze user preferences, past travel history, and real-time factors like weather or local events to craft tailored itineraries. Such tools are not only improving convenience but elevating the quality of travel experiences by ensuring travelers make the most of their time and budget.
Beyond itinerary generation, AI-driven platforms are optimizing booking systems. By integrating natural language processing (NLP), many apps allow users to engage in human-like conversations, ask questions, and receive instant responses. This shifts travel planning from a tedious task into an interactive, enjoyable activity. Additionally, AI-powered price prediction models help users find the best deals by analyzing historical flight and hotel pricing trends, minimizing the guesswork and stress associated with last-minute bookings.
Virtual Concierges: The Rise of AI-Powered Travel Assistants
One of the most fascinating applications of AI in travel is the emergence of virtual concierges. These are AI bots or digital assistants embedded in travel apps and hotel websites, designed to offer personalized, real-time assistance.
Virtual concierges are capable of handling a variety of traveler needs: from restaurant recommendations and local attraction guides to booking transportation and answering common questions about travel policies. They provide 24/7 support without the wait times associated with human agents, making assistance accessible at any point during a trip.
For instance, AI virtual concierges can analyze a traveler’s preferences and dining history to suggest meal spots that fit dietary needs or highlight hidden local gems, enhancing authenticity in travel experiences. Hotels also deploy these assistants to streamline check-in/check-out procedures, provide room service requests, and offer customized wellness or entertainment options, thereby elevating guest satisfaction while reducing operational costs.
Smart Travel Planning: How AI Tailors Every Step of Your Journey
Smart travel planning powered by AI goes beyond mere itinerary building—it embraces a holistic approach to travel management. AI systems integrate multiple data points, including traveler behavior, transportation modes, accommodation availability, real-time traffic, and even social sentiment from travel communities.
By synthesizing this information, AI-driven smart travel planning can optimize routes for efficiency, suggest activities suited to the time of day or weather conditions, and create flexible plans that adapt if disruptions like flight delays occur.
Tools powered by cheQin.ai and similar platforms are advancing in predictive capabilities. For example, they can forecast tourist traffic, enabling travelers to avoid overcrowded sites or find alternative experiences. This adaptability ensures a stress-free and immersive travel experience tailored to an individual’s style—be it adventure, relaxation, cultural exploration, or culinary tourism.
Additionally, smart travel planning enables corporate travel managers to reduce costs and streamline logistics by automating expense tracking, itinerary synchronization, and compliance monitoring. This makes business trips more productive and less taxing on travelers.
Future Trends: What’s Next in the AI-Driven Travel Revolution?
As AI technology matures, the travel industry is poised to witness several exciting trends that will further redefine experiences:
Hyper-Personalization: Advanced AI will combine biometric data, social media activity, and environmental sensors to tailor every aspect of travel—from security screening to in-flight entertainment—creating seamless, unique journeys.
Augmented Reality (AR) and AI Integration: Travelers will enjoy AI-powered AR guides overlaying historical facts, navigation pointers, or immersive language translations onto real-world environments through smartphones or smart glasses.
Sustainability Focus: AI will help travelers make eco-conscious choices by recommending green accommodations, optimal travel routes to reduce carbon footprints, and real-time environmental impact tracking.
Voice-Activated Travel Planning: Building on virtual concierge systems, voice-activated AI assistants will become more conversational and context-aware, enabling effortless multi-step travel arrangements through speech.
Autonomous Transport: AI-driven autonomous vehicles and drones may become common for short-distance travel and parcel delivery, changing how tourists navigate destinations.
Blockchain and AI Synergy: To enhance security and transparency, AI integrated with blockchain technology could streamline identity verification and fraud prevention in travel transactions.
Why cheQin.ai is Leading the Charge in AI Travel Innovation
Among these emerging tools, cheQin.ai stands out for its cutting-edge application of AI to travel planning challenges. With a user-centric interface, it simplifies complex decision-making by curating personalized suggestions based on robust data inputs, continuously learning from user feedback to refine its recommendations.
Its ability to integrate data from diverse sources—including transportation databases, social reviews, local event schedules, and even weather forecasts—makes cheQin.ai a comprehensive travel planner capable of adapting to dynamic travel conditions.
Moreover, cheQin.ai emphasizes ethical AI use, focusing on transparent algorithms and data privacy, a vital consideration as travelers become more aware of how their personal information is handled.
Embracing the AI-Powered Travel Future
Artificial intelligence is unlocking unprecedented possibilities for travelers and the travel industry alike. By embracing new AI tools like cheQin.ai, virtual concierges, and sophisticated smart travel planning systems, we are moving toward journeys that are smarter, personalized, and more accessible. As these innovations continue to evolve, they promise to make travel not only easier but richer and more meaningful.
For travelers willing to explore this AI-driven frontier, the future holds more than just destinations—it offers intelligent experiences tailored uniquely to them, redefining what it means to explore the world.
