How Freitag starts offering travel bag rental service

Freitag, the Swiss bag brand, is launching Freitag Rent, a hire service for its largest travel backpack line. With this new service, Freitag is extending its service range to offer a resource-saving alternative that tries to lower high consumeristic habits.

The brand’s new project is focused on the idea that most of us only need a travel bag a few days a year. Despite that, most homes host bulky, expensively priced luggage taking up a lot of precious space.

These are the reasons that are guiding Freitag to launch a bag hire service.

Any traveler can choose an F512 Voyager Rent travel backpack service at their nearest Freitag store, take off on their adventure, and then return it. Once it comes back, the store prepares the rented bag for its next outing. Renters benefit from all the advantages of a Freitag travel bag, but instead of paying the full purchase price, they only cover the days they really need it.

The F512 Voyager is the ideal Freitag travel companion: it’s incredibly roomy, easy to carry, and fits in almost any luggage rack. To suit it for its new purpose, the travel backpack comes with orange RENT labels and a removable inner lining.

A fresh lining is inserted into the bag in the store and cleaned after return, so they guarantee it remains hygienic. The brand’s luggage tags made from discarded truck tarps turn the mostly blue, silver, and gray rental bags into unmistakable one-offs.

Additionally, the inner compartment of the F512 Voyager contains the Freitag Rent Travel (Bag) Diary. At the start of the rental period, the current date is stamped in the diary, and hirers enter their name and destination.

They can then use the blank pages of the booklet to record their personal memories of the trip, pass on tips, or document travel routes. So, this way, the logbook records the adventures of the well-traveled bag and gives its temporary owners a surprising and unexpected connection.

“We aim to encourage sharing instead of owning, so we develop products that are used as often and for as long as possible,” said Peter Hollenstein, project manager, Freitag Rent.

“With our new service, we’re conserving resources and exploring a circular business model that’s new territory for us. Together, these elements bring us a step closer to the circular economy,” he added.

Using instead of owning and renting instead of buying are some of the principles behind this new initiative that match well with Freitag’s philosophy to offer bags made with recycled truck tarpaulins, among other sustainable materials.

The launch of the rental service is the outcome of several pilot projects and tests that addressed how Freitag Rent could complement the Zurich-based bag manufacturers’ service range, comprising various repair, exchange, and do-it-yourself options.

The basic price for a bag rental is €24. This flat rate covers the cost of making and maintaining the bag, cleaning and inserting the lining, in-store handling, and four days’ hire, which matches a long weekend’s needs. From the fifth day on, they charge an additional daily fee of €3, and from day 15, it’s €2. There’s no problem if renters change their travel plans because they don’t need to specify the return date in advance.

Freitag Rent is available at selected Freitag stores from June 25, 2025.

RadNet has completed the acquisition of breast AI developer iCAD, which will be integrated into RadNet’s subsidiary DeepHealth.

Through the acquisition, iCAD’s AI portfolio for breast cancer detection, risk evaluation, breast density, and breast arterial calcification assessment will be integrated with DeepHealth’s screening and diagnostic software.
