Will Virgin Australia’s Pet-Friendly Flights Be Available by the End of the Year? Big News For Pet-Parents

Friday, August 1, 2025
Virgin Australia is making a game-changing move for pet lovers by introducing pet-friendly flights on select domestic routes. This new initiative, which will go live by the end of 2025, allows passengers to bring their pets, specifically dogs and cats, on board during select Virgin Australia domestic flights. This development not only promises to make traveling more convenient for pet owners but also stands to have a significant impact on the tourism industry across Australia.
For years, pet owners have been faced with the dilemma of how to travel long distances without leaving their furry companions behind. Until now, many airlines have had strict policies around traveling with pets, often requiring them to be placed in cargo holds, far from the comfort of their owners. Virgin Australia’s new pet-friendly flights, however, aim to change that by providing a designated space for pets and their owners in specific rows, ensuring that both human and animal passengers can enjoy the flight together.
The announcement of this new service is set to attract more travelers to Australia’s domestic tourism sector, particularly those who have long wanted to bring their pets along on their adventures. As the tourism industry continues to recover and adapt post-pandemic, pet-friendly initiatives like this one will become an important driver for both domestic and international tourism.
The Benefits of Pet-Friendly Travel for Tourists and the Economy
The inclusion of pets in flight cabins is a huge step forward for the travel industry, which increasingly recognizes the emotional importance of pets to their owners. According to a recent report by Tourism Australia, pet-friendly tourism is growing in popularity, with many Australian destinations now offering accommodations and activities that cater specifically to travelers with pets. Virgin Australia’s pet-friendly flights align with this growing trend, providing a seamless travel experience for pet owners.
For tourists, the ability to travel with pets removes one of the biggest barriers to booking flights. Previously, travelers had to make difficult decisions about whether to leave their pets behind or pay high fees to have them flown separately in the cargo hold. With Virgin Australia’s new policy, pets can now travel with their owners in designated areas, making the flight more enjoyable and less stressful for both parties.
This initiative is not only beneficial for travelers but also for the broader Australian tourism sector. With more Australians likely to take domestic holidays, the increased demand for pet-friendly travel services will support local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, which can cater to tourists with pets. In turn, this will drive spending and contribute to local economies, especially in regions with a high volume of tourist activity.
Additionally, with many tourists now expecting a pet-friendly environment, destinations and businesses that can cater to this need will likely see a competitive advantage. For example, areas like Sydney, Melbourne, and Queensland could see increased visitation from domestic tourists who now have an easier time bringing their pets along. This could lead to a boost in tourism numbers for areas that have previously struggled to attract travelers without pet-related amenities.
The Logistics of Pet-Friendly Flights
Virgin Australia’s new pet-friendly flights will be available on a select number of domestic routes. The airline has received approval from Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) to allow small animals, primarily dogs and cats, to travel in specific rows designed to accommodate them and their owners. This carefully planned design ensures that the pets are kept secure in their carriers and do not disrupt other passengers during the flight.
One of the key features of these pet-friendly flights is that there will be no option for passengers to walk their pets around the cabin. According to Virgin Australia’s CEO, Dave Emerson, pets will need to remain in their designated carriers throughout the flight. This is an essential rule that ensures the safety of both pets and passengers and helps minimize the chances of disruptions on the flight.
Although the pets will not be allowed to roam freely, the presence of the owners in the same row will provide comfort for both parties. This initiative will help to make long journeys more enjoyable for those traveling with pets and reduce the anxiety that many pets experience when separated from their owners.
Regional and Domestic Tourism: The Key to Growth
While the immediate benefits of Virgin Australia’s pet-friendly flights are clear for pet owners, the broader impact on tourism is expected to be significant. One of the key areas where this new initiative will have an impact is regional tourism.
Tourism in Australia’s regional areas has long been seen as a key growth sector. However, for many pet owners, the idea of leaving their pets behind when exploring the country’s scenic coastlines, national parks, or rural destinations has been a major deterrent. Now that pet-friendly flights will be available to regional destinations, travelers will be more inclined to book trips to places that they might have previously skipped.
Additionally, some of Australia’s most popular regional destinations, such as the Whitsundays, Gold Coast, and Tasmania, already offer pet-friendly accommodations. With more convenient travel options, including pet-friendly flights, these regions can expect to see an increase in both domestic and international tourism. Regional tourism spending, especially in smaller, often overlooked destinations, will see a direct benefit from Virgin Australia’s new offering.
A Growing Demand for Pet-Friendly Travel
The rise of pet-friendly travel options is not just a trend in Australia; it is a global phenomenon. In countries such as the United States and Europe, airlines have already begun to adapt to the growing demand for pet travel, offering a range of services from in-cabin pet transport to luxury pet accommodations.
Globally, the pet industry is growing rapidly, with pet care, pet food, and pet travel services all seeing a boom. According to a report from the American Pet Products Association, the pet industry in the United States alone is expected to reach $30 billion by 2025. As pet ownership continues to rise worldwide, travel providers, including airlines, are seeing a growing market for pet-friendly services.
For Virgin Australia, the decision to introduce pet-friendly flights is a strategic move to capture this lucrative market. As more people consider their pets to be part of the family, they are increasingly looking for ways to travel with them, and Virgin Australia is positioning itself as a leader in the pet-friendly travel space.
Conclusion: Virgin Australia’s Role in Shaping the Future of Travel and Tourism
Virgin Australia’s move to introduce pet-friendly flights represents a significant step in making travel more inclusive for all passengers. By allowing pets to travel with their owners on domestic flights, Virgin Australia is enhancing the overall travel experience, particularly for pet owners who previously faced barriers to flying. This initiative will not only attract more domestic tourists but also support regional tourism, benefiting local economies and businesses.
As the tourism industry continues to evolve, the inclusion of pet-friendly services will likely become a standard feature for airlines around the world. Virgin Australia’s decision sets a precedent for other carriers, demonstrating that pet-friendly travel is not just a perk for pet owners but an important business strategy for tourism growth. With more travelers looking for ways to include their pets in their journeys, the future of pet-friendly travel is bright, and Virgin Australia is at the forefront of this movement.

In addition, the increased air traffic will help stimulate job growth at Tri-Cities Airport, with more opportunities in fields such as customer service, security, and ground operations. The airport has been a key driver of economic development in the region, and the addition of Breeze Airways’ service will further cement its role as a central hub for East Tennessee travel.
