A sea cave on the coast of the island of Capri in Italy and has become a viral ‘must’ for tourists – but people have been left shocked after seeing the reality of one boat tour recently
Taking a holiday presents a brilliant chance to discover extraordinary destinations, famous landmarks and stunning vistas unlike anything you’ve experienced before. Italy consistently delivers when it comes to offering visitors abundant culture, history, mouth-watering cuisine and vibrant nightlife. Throughout the year, tourists flock to the nation, and when summer arrives, the Amalfi Coast becomes a sought-after destination that features on countless bucket lists.
Just a short distance from the Amalfi Coast lies the island of Capri. With its sophisticated ambience, stunning natural beauty, and remarkable beaches, it’s easy to understand why visitors adore it. One experience that has become a social media sensation and essential activity is visiting the Blue Grotto – or Grotto Azzurra.
Numerous tourists embark on boat excursions from Capri’s Marina Grande to venture inside this spectacular cave.
Within, you’ll witness remarkable waters displaying a crystal-clear blue hue with silvery reflections, formed by minuscule air bubbles that attach to the surface of submerged objects. Drifting on the water and gazing around will leave you feeling as though you are “suspended in the heavens,” according to visitors.

Nevertheless, people have been astounded recently upon discovering the harsh reality of embarking on a Blue Grotto expedition when the tide is elevated.
Due to the natural sea cave measuring just 60 metres in length and 25 metres in width, only a single boat can pass through at any given moment. Tourists have been left horrified after witnessing two holidaymakers and their boat operator nearly capsizing as the guide attempts to navigate them through the cave opening.
A TikTok video, uploaded by @nwlch, captures the tense moment a boatman tries to steer a small vessel through the tight, low-arched entrance of a cavern. The user remarked: “They said to check out the Blue Grotto in Italy.” The clip has amassed over 102 million views.
One viewer explained: “For those wondering what he is doing, this is the entrance to the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) located on the island of Capri. The cave is located at sea level, so the access passage is It is only one meter high and to visit the cave a sailor must enter it with a small rowing boat, giving himself momentum with a chain attached to the rock. obviously in adverse sea conditions the entrance can be difficult in fact the cave is often closed during high tide or very rough sea.”
They continued: “In the specific case of the video probably they decided to ignore the rule and enter anyway despite the movement of the waves. if you decide to visit it It is always better to check the sea conditions a few days before to avoid an event like the one shown in the video.”
The footage left viewers astounded, with reactions ranging from amusement to disbelief. One person quipped: “You paid to get waterboarded in a cave. That’s wild.”
Another commented: “Thanks for de-influencing the Blue Grotto for me bestie.
“The Blue Grotto will never see me,” declared someone else. “I would have a panic attack straight away,” confessed another.
However, others highlighted that whilst the Blue Grotto is spectacular, visiting during high tides isn’t advisable. One visitor remarked: “I’ve done the Blue Grotto a few times but never at high tide. This is wild!”.
Another anxious viewer confessed: “I’m panicking watching this.”
A further comment read: “It’s a wonderful experience, but you never the Blue Grotto when the sea is rough and the tide is high. Those who operate the boats should know this. Evidently, he took the risk..”
One incredulous observer added: “I can’t believe someone took you out there when the tide was that high,” Making a cheeky reference to the classic Atomic Kitten hit, another quipped: “The tide is high but they’re holding on.”
A recent holidaymaker shared: “We are just back from a vacation in the Amalfi Coast and we really enjoyed the Blue Grotto. If I had seen this video prior, I might be rethinking going into the Blue Grotto. However, on a low tide day and if the sea is calmer, never miss this.”
Tourists are urged to check maritime conditions before purchasing tickets.
Grotto currently closed
A recent bulletin, published on Capri.com on behalf of Motoscafisti Capri, confirms: “The grotto is closed at the moment until the weather conditions change. It is not possible to guarantee ahead of time and with certainty if the grotto will be open or closed.
“Each morning at 9 am, the skippers arrive at the mouth of the cave and evaluate if it is safe to enter.”
