Bad roads, others fueling medical tourism, ABUAD hospital laments

Published

on

The management of the Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) Multi-System Hospital has said that the lack of access roads and the incomplete commencement of operations at the Ekiti Airport are aiding medical tourism abroad.

This was just as the management disclosed that it has begun a formal collaboration with Marengo Asia Hospitals, a leading medical group based in India, with a view to deepen surgical excellence and expand the scope of specialized procedures available to patients in Nigeria.

Speaking with newsmen at the weekend in Ado-Ekiti, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Akinola Akinmade, said that since the commencement of this collaboration, the Marengo Asia surgical team — working alongside the Multi-System Hospital’s Nigerian clinicians — has successfully completed nine kidney transplant procedures.

According to him, despite these strides in service delivery and global partnerships, the hospital continues to face significant infrastructural challenges that limit patient access and threaten the sustainability of its achievements, including the poor condition of the access roads leading to the hospital and the incomplete take-off of the Ekiti Airport project.

Dr. Akinmade said that these challenges remain a major barrier for patients, emergency transport, and visiting partners. “In addition, the Ekiti Airport project, which holds promise for expanding access and enabling faster referrals and medical tourism, is yet to take off fully.

“We therefore use this platform to appeal once again to all stakeholders to urgently intervene in improving the access routes and to fast-track the operationalization of the airport infrastructure in Ekiti State.”

He said: “Late last year, Afe Babalola University Multi-System Hospital (AMSH), under the visionary leadership of our Founder, Aare Afe Babalola, began a formal collaboration with Marengo Asia Hospitals, a leading medical group based in India. This partnership was established to deepen surgical excellence and expand the scope of specialized procedures available to patients right here in Nigeria.

“Since the commencement of this collaboration, the Marengo Asia surgical team — working alongside our dedicated Nigerian clinicians — has successfully completed nine (9) kidney transplant procedures here at AMSH. These procedures were carried out with the highest standards of safety and clinical quality, with excellent outcomes in all the cases carried out.

“In addition to transplant services, our Renal Centre is equipped with 17 modern dialysis machines, including dedicated machines for patients with infectious conditions such as hepatitis and similar ailments. The centre currently conducts an average of 400 dialysis treatment sessions each month, making it one of the busiest and most comprehensive dialysis programs in the country.”

The CMD added that, in recognition of their shared success and the enabling environment provided by ABUAD, the Marengo Asia team has also expressed strong interest in expanding their services into endourological surgeries and erectile dysfunction interventions — areas that are often underrepresented but critical to men’s health and quality of life.

“We see this as a vital step toward making AMSH not only a national reference point but a global destination for complex, patient-centered care.

“Beyond these surgical milestones, AMSH continues to uphold its social mandate through the Afe Abiye program, a charitable maternal and child health initiative launched late last year. I am pleased to report that under this program, we have already attended to over 500 pregnant women, providing them with completely free antenatal care, and conducted more than 150 deliveries at no cost to the patients or their families.”

Jelly Ko expands refill options on the back of strong sales and demand

Published

on

The in-house brand of Style Story, an Australia-based online retailer of South Korean beauty products, has added a fourth refill product to its portfolio.

Its global bestseller, Bubble Tea Steam Cream, recently joined Dewy Glaze Toner, Be Jelly Overnight Dream Serum, and White Truffle Souffle Serum in having a 50ml version.

“Bubble Tea Steam Cream is the product that put Jelly Ko on the map, and it is now available in a convenient refill pouch that’s perfect for topping up your empty jar or packing in your carry-on luggage.

“Refills are performing really well for us. Last month, across our sales channels, refill packs made up almost 40% of total sales for Bubble Tea Steam Cream, which is our hero SKU and most repurchased product. That is a huge adoption rate and shows that customers are not only repurchasing, but actively opting for the more sustainable option,” Lauren Lee, founder of Jelly Ko and Style Story, told CosmeticsDesign-Asia.

In fact, the travel-friendliness of the refill packs was pointed out to Lee by customers.

“Many started using the refill packs as travel companions because they are resealable, lightweight, and easy to pack due to its flat packaging. It wasn’t actually something that we realised when we originally designed them, but now that we’ve seen how people are using them, we have adopted that into our messaging as well.

“It makes sense because traditional cosmetics can be bulky, breakable, heavy, and just a bit annoying to cart around, even if they are travel-sized. These refill packs take all the fuss out of travelling with your go-to skin care products.”

Going forward, Jelly Ko plans to continue growing its refillable offerings.

“We will be adding a refill version for our Cherry Blossom Sleeping Mask, which will also double as a travel pack, in the next production run. As for dedicated travel-sized products, we are not planning any at this stage. We currently offer sachet samples and these refill packs, which fill the gap for now.”

Smooth like bubble

Jelly Ko’s Bubble Tea Steam Creamis claimed to be the world’s first bubble tea skin care, which has sold out six times since its launch in 2020.

Infused with collagen, panthenol, probiotics, squalane, and four types of hyaluronic acid, it is a nourishing yet lightweight moisturiser that “replaces oil, serum and cream in one step”.

Inspired by the popular beverage, this cream is fast-absorbing, and delivers deep hydration and buttery-soft smoothness targeted at improving dark spots, blemishes, and visible signs of ageing.

According to the brand, it helps to refine texture and tone for all skin types and ages; smooths and firms skin for a more even, radiant complexion; and does not contain additives, such as artificial fragrances, dyes, sulphates and parabens, that may trigger reactions.

In addition, the newly launched refillable pouch is said to use 90% less plastic, glass and paper, contributing to reduction of carbon emissions and packaging waste.

Marcus Rashford travels to Catalonia as Barcelona move appears close

Published

on

By Ian Parker, PA

Marcus Rashford appears to be closing in on his anticipated move to Barcelona after travelling to Catalonia on Sunday evening.

Rashford posted on social media a picture of himself travelling on a private plane, and Spanish media reported that the Manchester United forward had arrived in Catalonia at around 9:30pm local time.

The PA news agency understands a broad agreement is in place following talks between United and Barcelona over a season-long loan that would include an option to buy.

The 27-year-old has not played for his boyhood club since being hauled off in a Europa League match away to Viktoria Plzen on December 12th and ended the season on loan at Aston Villa.

Rashford is among five players to have informed United they wish to explore a future away from Old Trafford, where he came through the academy and scored 138 goals in 426 first-team appearances.

He has been training away from Ruben Amorim’s first-team since pre-season began while seeking a fresh start elsewhere.

In December, the England international admitted he was “ready for a new challenge” and last month revealed he would like to play alongside Barcelona’s teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal.

Barcelona sporting director Deco in May told Catalan radio station RAC1 that the club “like” Rashford, who does not have a squad number at United having lost the 10 shirt to new signing Matheus Cunha.

Cunha is one of two new signings at United this summer, with the club having also added left-back Diego Leon.

Bryan Mbeumo is set to join them at Old Trafford, with the Cameroon forward in the final stages of completing his move after United finally struck a deal with Brentford worth £65million (€75 million) plus up to £6million in add-ons.
