Seeking Cooler Climates and Quieter Destinations, ET TravelWorld
India’s outbound and domestic travellers are rethinking the way they holiday this summer, with the majority turning away from crowded hotspots in favour of quieter, cooler, and better-value destinations. Skyscanner’s Smarter Summer Report, released on 3 June 2025, finds that 96 per cent of Indian travellers plan to take the same or more trips than last year, and 95 per cent are prioritising “making the most” of their summer breaks.
There is growing demand for calm and crowd-free travel, with 52 per cent of Indian travellers preferring quieter destinations over traditional tourist hotspots. Additionally, 50 per cent are opting for destinations with cooler climates, reflecting a noticeable uptick in demand for hill towns and mountain retreats.
The report also highlights a shift in how travellers are planning: 84 per cent are open to moving their travel dates to save money, and 56 per cent are using comparison tools like Skyscanner to identify the best deals. Nearly half of respondents (49 per cent ) are yet to book their summer holidays, with 38 per cent unsure of where to go, signalling a need for inspiration and guidance.
“Summer is a popular time for Indian travellers to take a well-earned break,” said Mohit Joshi, Travel and Destinations Expert, Skyscanner. “What’s different this year is how intentional people are about planning. Many are still unsure about when and where to go. That’s why we created the Smarter Summer Report — to help travellers cut through the noise and make confident decisions.”
Skyscanner reports that Sunday is typically the cheapest day to fly, with the week of 25 August expected to be the most affordable this season. Their multi-city search tool is also gaining traction, especially among travellers planning multi-stop holidays.
To support the increasing interest in mountain getaways, Skyscanner has partnered with backpacking collective The Land of Wanderlust to launch an “Ultimate Backpacker’s Guide” for Indian travellers. Founder Sherwin Rebello notes, “We’re seeing travellers of all age groups seeking slower, more immersive travel — from digital nomads to older couples. There’s a clear shift towards intentional journeys.”
